“Eat Your Money, Streets Don’t Know Yesterday” - Fans Fire Back at Akon Over Wizkid, Afrobeats Claims

Another fan wrote, “Wizkid is who he is because of talent, not because Akon gave him a mic in 2008.”

Fans of Nigerian music are not holding back after Akon’s controversial statement claiming he “brushed up” Wizkid’s career and helped shape Afrobeats into what it is today.

While speaking on a podcast earlier this week, the Senegalese-American singer boasted about signing Wizkid in 2008 and introducing Nigerian artists to international business structures. But the comments didn’t sit well with fans, who saw the remarks as disrespectful, outdated, and self-serving.

One viral response summed up the mood:

“Eat your money… Streets don’t know yesterday.”

That single line has lit up social media, turning into a slogan among Afrobeats fans defending Wizkid and the genre’s growth as a Nigerian achievement, not a foreign invention.

Critics say Akon’s comments feel like an attempt to rewrite history at a time when Nigerian artists like Wizkid, Burna Boy, Davido, and Rema are dominating global charts without Western co-signs.

Some believe Akon was once helpful but the streets have moved on. “Respect your input, but don’t downplay the blood, sweat, and hustle of Nigerian artists who made Afrobeats a global sound,” one post read.

As of now, neither Wizkid nor his team has publicly responded, but fans seem to have made their decision loud and clear: Afrobeats belongs to the streets not old claims.
