Former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar has announced the launch of the Atiku Africa Scholars Fund, a multi-million dollar scholarship initiative aimed at supporting underprivileged students across West and Central Africa.
The fund, which will operate in partnership with several universities in Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, and Rwanda, is designed to provide full and partial scholarships to academically promising students in fields such as engineering, public health, agriculture, and climate science.
The former Vice President unveiled the initiative at a press briefing held at the American University of Nigeria (AUN), which he founded in Yola, Adamawa State.

“This fund is about creating ladders of opportunity,” Atiku said. “There are brilliant young Africans who simply need a chance and education is the most powerful way to give them that.”
According to the project directors, the scholarship program will begin with 300 students in its first year and expand gradually, with 40% of slots reserved for female applicants.
Development partners including UNESCO and the Mastercard Foundation have expressed interest in collaborating with the fund to increase its reach across more countries by 2026.

Atiku, who has remained an influential voice in education and governance since his last presidential bid, said the scholarship program aligns with his lifelong belief in “education as a cornerstone of national progress.”
Applications for the 2025–2026 academic year open in July.
