What began as a brief encounter in a London nightclub has ended in a stunning High Court ruling nearly a decade later.
Cynthia Chia has been ordered to pay £25,000 in damages to Dubai-based energy trader Idowu Ogunkanmi, after she falsely accused him of rape and carried out a nearly nine-year campaign of harassment and defamation. The court found Chia guilty of both harassment and libel, despite her refusal to appear in court or send legal representation.
The saga began in 2015, when Ogunkanmi, 44, met Chia during a night out in London. The two shared a one-night stand what Ogunkanmi assumed was a brief and consensual encounter. But within months, Chia began what the High Court judge later described as a “sustained, relentless, and vindictive” campaign of false accusations and personal harassment.
Ogunkanmi, a father of three who travels internationally for work, said the ordeal had deeply affected his life and reputation.
“When I met her she seemed perfectly normal,” he told MailOnline. “For someone to be that persistent for so long on a lie, I pray for her. There’s definitely something wrong with her, I don’t know what it is. I met this person for less than 12 hours, that was it… to me that’s been the scariest part.”
The court awarded him £25,000 in damages, acknowledging the emotional toll and reputational harm he suffered. Chia, who did not engage with the legal process, offered no defense.
Legal experts say the ruling sends a strong message about the serious consequences of false accusations and prolonged harassment, particularly in the digital age where reputations can be destroyed in moments.
The case has drawn attention online, where many are shocked by the length and intensity of the campaign waged over a single night a stark reminder of how quickly a lie can spiral into years of trauma.
