In a move that stunned economists and sparked fierce global debate, former U.S. President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that Indonesia will now face a 19% tariff on all goods entering the United States, while American products will enter Indonesia completely tariff-free. Yes completely free.
Calling it a “perfectly fair deal,” Trump claimed the new trade setup would correct what he called “years of one-sided nonsense” that allowed countries like Indonesia to “take advantage of weak American leadership.” He told reporters, “If they want access to the greatest market on Earth, they’ll pay for it. We’re not the world’s piggy bank anymore.”
But critics are calling it economic strong-arming, warning that the deal looks more like a lopsided ultimatum than a mutual agreement.
“What kind of ‘deal’ has one country paying 19% just to play, while the other strolls in duty-free?” said one trade analyst. “This is about leverage, not partnership.”
Indonesian officials have yet to comment formally, but sources close to the matter say backlash is brewing behind the scenes, with some suggesting this could spark a quiet trade revolt among U.S. partners in Asia.
For Trump supporters, though, this is exactly the kind of bold negotiating they voted for America First, no apologies. The real question now: How many more countries are next?
