Senate Referee Blocks Major Medicaid Cuts from Trump’s Big, Beautiful Bill

Well, Trump’s big, beautiful bill just hit a big, unexpected wall In a dramatic twist on Capitol Hill this week, the Senate’s nonpartisan parliamentarian, Elizabeth MacDonough, ruled that several major Medicaid cuts in Donald Trump’s sweeping tax-and-spending proposal must be removed dealing a serious blow to Republican hopes of passing the bill quickly.

The ruling came during what’s known as a Byrd Bath the process where the Senate referee decides what can and can’t be included in bills passed through budget reconciliation the shortcut Republicans are using to avoid a filibuster and pass the bill with just 51 votes.

And this ruling was clear: some of the deepest proposed cuts to Medicaid including new work requirements and restrictions on state funding simply don’t qualify. That means they’re now stripped from the bill.

For millions of low income Americans, this is a moment of relief. The proposed changes could have pushed people off coverage, especially in rural areas and among seniors needing long term care. But for Trump and Senate Republicans, it’s a serious roadblock.

Now, GOP leaders are scrambling to rewrite the bill in time for their self imposed July 4th deadline but without the Medicaid savings, they may have a much tougher time selling it to their own party.

The question now? Can Trump’s team keep the rest of the bill intact or is this the beginning of a bigger unraveling?

One thing is clear: when it comes to healthcare and spending in Washington, even a “beautiful bill” can get ugly real fast.
