What began as a simple group chat has spiraled into one of the most dangerous intelligence scandals in years and now, the Pentagon is reeling.
Two top aides to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth are under federal investigation, according to three individuals close to the matter. At the center of the controversy is a leak involving classified military attack plans on Yemen allegedly discussed over Signal, an encrypted messaging app more known for private chats than national security briefings.
The scandal, now dubbed “Signalgate,” started in April when the Pentagon’s Inspector Generallaunched a formal inquiry. What triggered the probe? A journalist was accidentally added to the secret group chat a chat that reportedly included Hegseth, Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and others.

The chat was originally created by former National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, who has since stepped down. But the damage was done.
Insiders claim Ricky Buria, one of Hegseth’s closest aides, may have helped bypass Pentagon security protocols by setting up unsecured internet access so the Secretary could use Signal freely a move that could violate federal cybersecurity laws.
Despite the chaos, the administration insists no classified material was shared. “There was no classified information on that chat,” Waltz told lawmakers Tuesday during his U.N. ambassador confirmation hearing.
But not everyone is buying it. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are watching Hegseth closely, with several senators reportedly telling The Daily Mail that he’s “on thin ice” and that more resignations may follow.
With the Pentagon already stretched thin in global conflicts, Signalgate isn’t just a tech mistake it’s a breakdown in command at the highest level of America’s military leadership. And in Washington, leaks like this don’t just disappear they end careers.
