WorldPride 2025 Kicks Off in Washington D.C. with Record-Breaking Global Turnout

Streets across the U.S. capital transformed into a rainbow wave of music, flags, and celebration today as WorldPride 2025 officially kicked off, marking one of the largest international LGBTQ+ gatherings in history.

An estimated 2.3 million people from over 70 countries have descended upon Washington D.C. for the weeklong celebration of diversity, inclusion, and human rights. It is the first time the United States has hosted WorldPride since 2019, and the energy in the capital is electrifying.

The opening parade featured over 400 floats, live performances from global stars including Lil Nas XSam Smith, and Tems, as well as speeches from U.S. leaders and international human rights activists.

Vice President Kamala Harris, delivering a passionate address from the National Mall, said:

“Let the world see that love is love, and equality is not optional it’s the foundation of true democracy.”

Participants marched carrying signs with slogans such as “Queer and Proud,” “Protect Trans Youth,”and “Love Has No Borders.” Notably, delegations from countries where LGBTQ+ rights are heavily suppressed such as Uganda, Russia, and Saudi Arabia also participated, drawing global attention to their continued struggles.

While the event has brought joy to millions, it also comes amid rising political tensions in the U.S. over LGBTQ+ rights. Several states have recently passed controversial laws limiting gender-affirming healthcare and banning pride materials in schools.

Protests from far-right groups were reported near the National Archives and the Lincoln Memorial but were peacefully contained by law enforcement. No major incidents have been reported.

“This event sends a powerful message that hate has no home here,” said D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser. “Our city stands as a beacon of hope and pride for every person around the world still fighting to be seen.”

WorldPride organizers announced that the event will include educational forums, cultural exhibitions, a PrideTech summit, and memorial events to honor LGBTQ+ individuals lost to violence, suicide, and HIV/AIDS.

Washington’s hotels are fully booked, and local businesses are thriving amid the influx of visitors. City officials expect the event to generate over $900 million in economic activity for the region.

The grand finale concert and fireworks display will take place next weekend at the Capitol Reflecting Pool and is expected to draw over half a million spectators.
