Grammy-winning rapper Kendrick Lamar has shocked the music industry with the surprise release of his latest album, Prophet Mode, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 this week cementing his place as one of the most influential artists of the decade.
Released with no prior marketing, Prophet Mode dropped at midnight on June 3 and instantly exploded across streaming platforms. Within 48 hours, it had amassed over 210 million streams on Spotify and Apple Music, breaking Lamar’s own previous record set with DAMN. in 2017.
Critics are hailing the album as a masterclass in storytelling, social commentary, and sonic evolution. The 14-track project blends jazz, soul, drill, and West Coast beats, layered beneath raw, poetic bars tackling topics like AI dominance, American politics, spiritual awakening, and the Black family.

In the track “AI Ain’t God,” Kendrick addresses fears over artificial intelligence replacing human purpose:
“We code machines to feel, while losing what we are / Replacing mothers with robots and souls with avatars.”
Another standout, “Legacy Tax,” has stirred social media with bars seemingly aimed at Kanye Westand Jay-Z, with fans debating whether Lamar is subtly staking his claim as hip-hop’s modern-day GOAT.
Fans and celebrities alike flooded X (formerly Twitter) with praise. Rihanna tweeted: “Kendrick done flipped the script AGAIN. #ProphetMode is dangerous.”
Even longtime rival Drake posted a cryptic story on Instagram: “He came ready this time. Respect.”
Music journalist and Hot97 host Ebro Darden called the album “the most culturally relevant drop of the 2020s,” and compared Lamar’s lyrical depth to the works of Gil Scott-Heron and Nas.
The release comes just weeks before Lamar’s scheduled performance at the 2025 BET Awards, now widely expected to be the most anticipated set of the night. Rumors are also circulating about a global tour, though no official dates have been announced.
Despite the fanfare, Kendrick himself has remained quiet, posting only one message on Instagram:
“No interviews. No apologies. Let the music speak.”
Prophet Mode has already been submitted for Grammy consideration, with insiders predicting major wins across multiple categories including Album of the Year and Best Rap Album.
