What was meant to be a joyful celebration turned into a nightmare as gunfire broke out during a high school graduation ceremony in Minnesota, leaving several people injured and four suspects in custody.
The incident occurred Friday evening on the football field of Northview High School, where hundreds of students, parents, and teachers had gathered for the Class of 2025 commencement ceremony. Witnesses say the sound of gunshots rang out shortly after the valedictorian’s speech, sending crowds running for cover and sparking chaos.

“It was supposed to be the best night of my life,” said graduating senior Alicia Williams. “Suddenly, we were ducking behind chairs and praying not to get hit.”
Law enforcement officials confirmed that at least six people were injured, including two students and one teacher. None of the injuries are currently life-threatening, but several victims remain hospitalized in stable condition.
Four suspects all believed to be between the ages of 17 and 20 were arrested at the scene or nearby after a police manhunt. Officers recovered two firearms and believe the shooting may have stemmed from an earlier dispute between rival youth groups.
“This was not a random attack,” said Police Chief Daniel Horton. “Our initial investigation points to a targeted altercation that tragically spilled into a public space.”
Authorities are now examining surveillance footage and social media activity from earlier in the day to determine whether the shooting was planned. The suspects, whose names have not yet been released, are expected to face multiple felony charges including attempted murder and unlawful possession of firearms on school property.
The incident has reignited debate about gun violence in schools, with Minnesota Governor Carla Jennings calling it “another devastating reminder that no place in America is immune to the epidemic of gun violence.”
In Washington, lawmakers from both parties have weighed in. President Trump called the shooting “horrific,” while also reiterating his opposition to new gun control laws, saying “mental health reform, not gun bans,” should be the focus. Democrats, however, renewed calls for stricter background checks and youth access limits.
Northview High School has postponed all upcoming events, and grief counselors have been dispatched to assist students and faculty. A candlelight vigil will be held Sunday evening to honor the victims and reaffirm community strength.
“This is not how our seniors should remember their graduation,” said Principal Angela Morse through tears. “We are shattered but we will heal.”
