A new law signed last month with little media coverage is causing a stir: the U.S. government has granted sweeping powers to federal agencies to collect “ambient data” from smartphones, even when they’re not in use. That includes voice recordings, movement, and location data.
Though officials claim it’s to combat terrorism and deepfake crimes, privacy experts are warning Americans: “Your phone is now a surveillance device.”
