In a controversial new policy, the U.S. State Department will now require international students to provide full access to their social media accounts when applying for a visa.
The move, meant to bolster national security, has raised alarms over privacy rights and digital surveillance.
“This is invasive and unfair,” said an immigration lawyer. “We’re treating students like threats before they even arrive.”
Officials argue the change helps screen for potential risks, but critics say it sends the wrong message and may discourage global talent from coming to study in the U.S.
