The Trump administration’s latest executive order went into effect at midnight, enacting a broad travel ban affecting 12 countries, mostly located in Africa and the Middle East.
The White House defended the policy, saying it aims to block “potential threats from unstable regions with weak vetting protocols.” But critics, including civil rights groups, called it a politically motivated and discriminatory measure.
Airport protests erupted overnight in New York, Chicago, and San Francisco, echoing the outcry over Trump’s 2017 Muslim ban. Lawyers have been stationed at terminals to assist travelers, and legal challenges are already moving through the courts.
“This ban is not about safety,” said immigration attorney Amina Yusuf. “It’s about xenophobia wrapped in red tape.”
