“They Own A Home in America, Now They’re Homeless - What Changed?”

Just three years ago, Travis and Renee Mitchell were living the American Dream: two full-time jobs, two kids in school, and a cozy three-bedroom home in the suburbs.

Today, that same family is living out of their 2008 minivan.

“We didn’t lose our house in a fire. We lost it to inflation,” Travis said. “Groceries doubled. Rent went up. Our jobs didn’t.”

Their mortgage ballooned. Medical bills piled up after Renee’s surgery. Then Travis was laid off when his company outsourced to AI.

“We weren’t irresponsible,” Renee said. “We just couldn’t keep up with an economy that doesn’t care if you’re trying.”

Now they shower at gas stations, homeschool from the backseat, and search for part-time gigs just to afford gas.

Their story went viral after a local journalist posted a video of Travis breaking down while holding a “We Used to Be Middle Class” sign.

“We owned a home,” he said through tears. “Now we’re praying for a parking space that feels safe.
