The U.S. Supreme Court began hearings today on a blockbuster case that could determine whether states can override federal abortion protections and possibly criminalize the procedure entirely.
At the heart of the case is Missouri’s 2024 law banning all abortions after six weeks, even in cases of rape or incest. The law directly conflicts with the 2023 Federal Reproductive Access Act, setting up a legal showdown with nationwide consequences.
The courtroom was packed, and hundreds of protesters gathered outside the Supreme Court building. “Our rights are on the line,” shouted one group of women’s rights advocates. On the other side, pro-life demonstrators prayed and waved “Heartbeat = Life” signs.
A ruling is expected by late summer and could become the most consequential abortion decision in over 50 years.
