One moment, she was walking home from the movies. The next, she was bleeding in the middle of a Manhattan street.
Paola Di Leo, a 29-year-old singer songwriter, is speaking out after a shocking and violent attack left her bruised, bloodied, and shaken. On what seemed like a calm Monday evening around 8 p.m., just steps from the Regal Cinema in New York City, a stranger suddenly lunged at her screaming, enraged and struck her in the face with a cellphone.

“She had her hands on my face before I even realized what was happening,” Di Leo said in an emotional interview. “She hit me in the forehead with her phone, and I tried to cover myself, but it was too late.”
The random assault unfolded in front of stunned bystanders. Paola’s boyfriend, who tried to defend her, was also attacked and bitten on the arm by the woman. “He still has the teeth marks. She was like a complete animal,” Di Leo said.
Even more disturbing? Despite the chaos and the visible injuries, police officers at the scene reportedly declined to arrest the suspect. According to Di Leo, they told her they could only take action if the woman attacked again a response that has left many questioning how such blatant violence could be met with such little urgency.
“I was bleeding, visibly injured,” she said. “And this girl was screaming, totally unhinged. But the cops let her walk away.”
The attack has sparked outrage online, with many questioning how someone can be violently assaulted in broad daylight, with witnesses all around, and still not see justice.
For Paola Di Leo, the physical wounds will heal but the emotional scars of being randomly attacked on a New York City street may last much longer.
