Speaking during a campaign event in Georgia, President Donald Trump stirred fresh controversy by criticizing the growing number of federal holidays in the U.S., specifically pointing to Juneteenth. “We’ve got too many non working holidays now,” Trump said to a mixed crowd. “It’s great to remember history, but we also need to get back to work and rebuild our country.”
Juneteenth, officially recognized as a federal holiday in 2021, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. For many Black Americans, it’s a sacred day of reflection, celebration, and continued calls for justice. Trump’s remarks were quickly met with backlash across social media, with civil rights leaders calling his comments tone deaf and disrespectful to Black history.
While Trump did not directly oppose the existence of Juneteenth, critics argue that his message undermines the significance of the holiday. Supporters, however, applauded his focus on economic productivity and criticized what they called “performative politics” behind some federal holidays.
The comments come as Trump continues his campaign trail ahead of the 2026 midterms, reigniting debates about cultural recognition, race, and what holidays truly represent the values of America.
As the nation marks Juneteenth, Trump’s words have once again placed him at the center of a national conversation that’s far from over.
