New South Korean President Pledges Closer U.S. Alliance, Outreach to North Korea

In his inaugural address on Tuesday, newly elected South Korean President Lee Jae-myung made a strong commitment to enhancing ties with the United States and Japan, while signaling an openness to renewed dialogue with North Korea.

“Security in Northeast Asia is inseparable from our partnership with the United States,” Lee said in a nationally broadcast speech from Seoul. “We will strengthen our alliance, modernize our defense cooperation, and work for peace on the Korean Peninsula.”

Lee, who won a narrow victory in last month’s runoff election, has been described as a pragmatic progressive with strong nationalist leanings. His approach appears to balance assertive diplomacy with strategic caution.

In Washington, the Biden administration welcomed the statement. Secretary of State Antony Blinken noted that “a united front among democratic allies is essential for long-term regional stability.”

Lee also indicated his willingness to engage with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, suggesting a possible reopening of cross-border communication lines.

The U.S. has remained cautious on the matter, emphasizing that any dialogue with Pyongyang must include “measurable steps toward denuclearization.”

President Lee is expected to visit Washington in July for a joint summit with President Biden.
