In Kathmandu this week, over 80,000 people filled the streets. Not for a celebrity. Not for a protest. But to call for something the world thought was long gone: a return to monarchy.
Waving royal flags and chanting “Long live the King,” the people demanded the reinstatement of former monarch King Gyanendra, who was dethroned in 2008. The politicians in power have promised democracy but the people say all they’ve gotten is corruption, chaos, and poverty.
“This isn’t just about a crown,” one protester told reporters. “It’s about stability. About dignity. About not having to beg for food while politicians fly private jets.”
The world may mock the idea of a modern monarchy but for many in Nepal, it’s a desperate cry to return to something that worked, even if it wasn’t perfect. When democracy doesn’t deliver, people will reach back for what once gave them hope even if it wears a crown.
