Derrick Owens, 34, was standing behind a woman at the grocery store in Atlanta when her card was declined. Twice.
She had baby formula, rice, and some soup. That’s it. She looked embarrassed, ready to walk away. Derrick stepped up and paid the bill. $27.19.
When she looked up to thank him, they both froze. Ms. Garrison, he said. It was his old high school English teacher the one who stayed after class to help him pass, the one who gave him his first journal.
Now, she was out of work, caring for a sick parent, and skipping meals. “I taught poetry,” she said softly. “But I didn’t think I’d live one.”
Derrick started a GoFundMe that’s already hit $80,000. But the real story is how quickly a life can change and how quickly a community can lift it back up.
