The Ivory Coast’s Electoral Commission has officially barred opposition leader Tidjane Thiam from running in the 2025 presidential election, citing legal inconsistencies around his citizenship status a decision that is drawing fierce criticism both at home and abroad.
Thiam, a prominent economist and former CEO of Credit Suisse, has long been seen as a reformist voice with deep ties to international institutions. But his past French citizenship which he reportedly renounced years ago was used as the basis to exclude him from the candidate list.

“This is not a legal decision it is a political ambush,” said a spokesperson for Thiam’s campaign.
Pro-democracy groups have condemned the move, warning that it could destabilize the country’s fragile political balance. International observers from the African Union are expected to review the decision, which has reignited fears of electoral violence.
