High Cost of Transport and Food Dampens Eid-el-Kabir Festivities Nationwide

As Nigerian Muslims prepare for Eid-el-Kabir, the festive mood across the country has been clouded by rising inflation, leaving many struggling to celebrate.

Transportation fares have doubled in most parts of the country, with some inter-state trips costing nearly ₦20,000 per passenger. Similarly, the prices of staple foods like rice, meat, and cooking oil have surged, pushing many households to cut down on traditional celebrations.

“I used to travel home every Eid, but this year I just can’t afford it,” said Salisu Umar, a trader in Lagos.

Markets in Kano, Abuja, and Enugu also reported lower customer turnout, with traders lamenting poor sales.

Religious leaders have called for empathy and support for less privileged families during this period, urging wealthier Nigerians to extend generosity.

“Let us remember the true essence of Eid: sacrifice, love, and giving,” said Sheikh Ibrahim Maqari of Abuja Central Mosque.
