In a historic ruling that sends shockwaves through the American political system, former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan was sentenced to 7½ years in federal prison and fined $2.5 million for his role in a sweeping corruption scandal.
Madigan, who served nearly four decades in office and was once considered one of the most powerful Democrats in the country, was convicted of racketeering, bribery, and fraud. Federal prosecutors accused him of using his political position to push legislation that benefited allies and business associates in exchange for financial kickbacks.
“This sentence is a message,” said U.S. Attorney Rebecca Sneed. “No one, no matter how powerful, is above the law.”
The conviction closes a chapter on what critics have long called a culture of “legalized bribery” in Illinois politics.
