In a landmark decision handed down on Tuesday, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 6–3 to expand Americans’ rights to carry firearms in public spaces, striking down several state-level restrictions as unconstitutional.
The ruling, delivered in the case of Henderson v. New Jersey, invalidated a 2022 New Jersey law that required “justifiable need” for carrying a firearm outside the home. Writing for the majority, Chief Justice John Roberts stated, “The Second Amendment does not end at one’s doorstep. Citizens have the right to bear arms for lawful purposes, including self defense, beyond the home.”
The decision marks one of the most significant expansions of gun rights in over a decade and has already triggered legal challenges in other states with strict permitting laws, including California, Hawaii, and New York.
Gun rights advocates hailed the decision as a victory for liberty and constitutional integrity. “This is a huge win for the American people,” said NRA spokesperson Jenna Maley. “The Constitution is clear and today, so is the Court.”
Critics, however, warn that the decision will make it more difficult to regulate weapons in high crime areas and sensitive zones like schools and hospitals. “We are heading into uncharted and dangerous territory,” said Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ). “This ruling will put more guns on the streets, not fewer.”
