Senate Moves Closer to Upgrading YABATECH to Full-Fledged University

Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH)

A significant milestone was reached today as a bill seeking to convert Yaba College of Technology into a full fledged University of Technology successfully scaled second reading in the Nigerian Senate.

The bill, sponsored by Senator Solomon Adeola representing Lagos West, aims to reposition YABATECH one of Nigeria’s oldest and most prestigious polytechnics into a degree-awarding institution with expanded academic capacity and global competitiveness.

During the plenary session, several lawmakers threw their weight behind the proposal, emphasizing the need to modernize Nigeria’s technical education system and align it with global standards.

YABATECH has the infrastructure, the history, and the academic tradition to stand as a full university,” Senator Adeola said. “This conversion will open more opportunities for innovation, research, and technical advancement.

Established in 1947, YABATECH has produced thousands of graduates in engineering, science, and applied technology. Supporters of the bill believe that the upgrade will empower the institution to better serve Nigeria’s growing demand for advanced technical education and position it to compete with global institutions.

Some senators, however, called for caution and thorough evaluation to ensure funding and governance issues are addressed during the transition process.

The bill has now been referred to the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund for further legislative action and public input.

If passed and signed into law, the new university will be known as the Federal University of Technology, Yaba, and will join the ranks of other upgraded polytechnics in Nigeria, including those in Kaduna and Akure.
