A protest erupted in Abuja today, with dozens of demonstrators taking to the streets in response to the detention of controversial figure VeryDarkMan (VDM) by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The protest, which began at the Unity Fountain, quickly gained momentum as supporters and activists gathered to demand his release.
The protesters, who held placards reading “Free VDM” and “Stop the Oppression,” voiced concerns over what they described as unjust treatment of the outspoken critic. VDM, known for his candid social media presence and frequent criticisms of government policies, was arrested earlier this week by the EFCC on charges related to cyberbullying and defamation.
Speaking to reporters during the protest, one of the organizers, who preferred to remain anonymous, stated, “This is bigger than just VDM. This is about freedom of expression, and the government can’t silence us for speaking out.”
Though the protest remained peaceful, it drew significant attention from passersby and local media. As the day went on, the demonstrators remained firm in their demand for VDM’s immediate release and for a review of the charges against him.
While the EFCC has yet to comment publicly on the protest, many are now calling for a broader movement to protect free speech and prevent what they see as the criminalization of dissent.
The protest ended without major incident, but the situation continues to develop, with many questioning the role of government agencies in curbing the voices of young activists and content creators.
