Nigeria’s oil industry has made headlines once again with the quiet debut of its 27th crude oil stream, known as Obodo Medium Sweet Crude. Unlike previous oil grade launches, this one was rolled out with minimal media fanfare but insiders say the move could have a lasting impact on Nigeria’s global oil portfolio.
According to senior officials at Conoil, the first company to export the blend, Obodo crude offers a rare balance of low sulfur content and medium viscosity, making it ideal for refineries in Europe and Asia.

“This blend may soon rival Bonny Light in value,” said an NUPRC engineer who participated in early field testing. Industry analysts suggest Obodo could fetch competitive premiums as demand for cleaner-burning fuels increases globally.
The blend was discovered in a lesser-known basin near the Niger Delta and was quietly approved for export late last month.
