In a quiet move set to redefine governance in Nigeria’s southeast, Abia State has signed a major digital transformation deal with telecom giant MTN Nigeria.
The agreement, finalized at Government House in Umuahia, includes the rollout of statewide internet hubs, digital ID systems for residents, and e-governance platforms that will automate local services.

“This is not just about fast internet,” said a senior MTN executive at the closed-door signing ceremony. “This is about building the first smart-state framework in Eastern Nigeria.”
Governor Alex Otti’s office hinted that pilot projects including AI-powered tax assessments and smart traffic systems could launch by Q4 of 2025.
