Outspoken activist and social crusader Aisha Yesufu has sparked a national debate after making a powerful statement about Nigeria’s economic realities, saying bluntly: “Nigeria is poor. Forget all the oil and shiny numbers. We’re not benefitting we only receive 5% of what leaves this country.”
Speaking during a public town hall meeting in Lagos, Yesufu didn’t mince words. She accused international corporations and local political elites of selling Nigeria short by allowing foreign control over the nation’s natural resources especially crude oil, gas, and solid minerals with little return for ordinary citizens.

“As long as we cannot refine our own oil and we depend on others to tell us what our worth is, then we are not a sovereign country. We are being robbed, in daylight,” Yesufu declared, drawing loud applause from the audience.
She added that the current system only gives Nigeria around 5% of total earnings from its own exports, a figure she described as “shameful and unacceptable.”
Yesufu went further, saying the time has come for Nigerians to demand full control over their economy.
“This is not about opposition or politics. This is about survival. Until we break free from this exploitative system, we will remain poor in a country that should be wealthy.”
Her words have since gone viral on social media, with many Nigerians echoing her frustrations and sharing their own stories of hardship.
Experts agree that while Nigeria is rich in natural resources, poor refining capacity, weak policies, and lopsided agreements have left the country with minimal gains from its own wealth.
The call for economic independence is growing louder. Whether government leaders will respond with structural reform or continue with the status quo remains to be seen.
