Former U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris didn’t hold back during a global address at the 2025 Australian Real Estate Conference, where she used the international platform to issue a stern warning about the rising tide of authoritarianism and anti-democratic behavior in today’s world. In a sharp rebuke that drew global media attention, Harris invoked the 1930s a dark prelude to World War II as a cautionary comparison.

“History does not repeat itself exactly, but it rhymes. And right now, it’s starting to rhyme in dangerous ways,” Harris said to a packed audience of real estate investors, policy analysts, and global business leaders.
She directly challenged controversial tech billionaire Elon Musk, who recently described empathy as a weakness in Western civilization. Harris pushed back forcefully, calling empathy “the core of humanity,” and argued that the erosion of compassion in public discourse is a threat to democracy.

Harris also drew parallels between the Trump-era “America First” foreign policy and the pre-war isolationism that enabled fascist regimes in the past. “Turning inward is exactly what allowed the worst actors to thrive in the 1930s,” she warned. “We must not forget those lessons now.”
Her remarks immediately went viral, sparking debate across the U.S. political spectrum, with conservatives labeling her speech as fearmongering and Democrats praising her for her courage and clarity.
