“From Lagos to Abuja: Tinubu’s Leadership Has Been a Disaster for Ordinary Nigerians,” Say Angry Citizens

As public anger continues to rise over worsening economic conditions, many Nigerians are no longer holding back their frustrations toward President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. For a growing number of citizens, the disappointment didn’t start in Aso Rock it started in Lagos, when Tinubu served as governor from 1999 to 2007.

Now, two years into his presidency, critics are calling his leadership style “a recycled disaster”, accusing him of deepening poverty, enabling corruption, and placing loyalty over competence.

“Tinubu has always governed for himself and his circle,” said Kemi Ajibola, a public affairs analyst in Lagos. “From the moment he took over Lagos, it became about power, not the people.”

Though often praised by his supporters for increasing Lagos State’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), Tinubu’s legacy in the state remains deeply controversial. Critics argue that his policies laid the foundation for today’s urban poverty and rent-driven economy.

Questions have long surrounded Alpha Beta, a tax consulting firm reportedly linked to Tinubu, which allegedly received billions in commission for tax collection. Many Lagosians still view the state as a private business empire, controlled by a few political elites.

“Nothing was for the people,” said Adebayo Odu, a trader at Alaba Market. “Lagos became too expensive, while public services collapsed.”

Since taking office as president in 2023, Tinubu has pushed a series of radical reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies, which has led to record-high fuel prices, transport fares, and food inflation.

For many, these moves feel like a repeat of his governorship playbook profit driven policies with little relief for the poor.

“He’s doing the same thing he did in Lagos enrich a few, abandon the rest,” said a civil rights activist in Ibadan. “The masses are hungrier now than ever.”

Public trust in the presidency continues to nosedive. Hashtags like #TinubuIsAFailure and #SackTheOldOrder have trended repeatedly in recent weeks. Even some within the ruling party are growing restless.

“We have to be honest with ourselves,” one former APC youth leader said anonymously. “This government is not working, and Nigerians are tired of recycled politicians with tired ideas.”

As the country marks two years of Tinubu’s administration, many citizens are demanding a shift toward leadership that listens, delivers, and uplifts the people, not just political allies.

“Enough is enough,” said Deborah Folarin, a graduate in Osun State. “From Lagos to Abuja, it’s been promises, pain, and poverty. We deserve better.”
