Feminist Professor Fired After Islamist Group Demands Her Removal, Sparking Free Speech Uproar

A prominent feminist professor at a leading UK university has been dismissed from her post following intense pressure from an Islamist advocacy group, igniting a national firestorm over academic freedom, gender rights, and the growing influence of religious politics in Western institutions.

Dr. Helena Royce, a tenured professor of gender studies at Westbridge University, was terminated late last week after the group “Faith and Justice Union” accused her of promoting “anti-Islamic rhetoric” and “spreading cultural hostility” through her lectures and published works on women’s rights in conservative religious societies.

The university initially stood by Royce, citing her academic freedom and long-standing reputation as a respected scholar. However, after a wave of organized protests, social media campaigns, and threats of a mass boycott by affiliated student organizations, the university’s board voted 6–3 to remove her from her position.

In a brief statement, the university said:

“We are committed to creating an inclusive environment. After reviewing the concerns raised by students and community members, we have decided to part ways with Professor Royce in the best interest of campus unity and safety.”

Dr. Royce, who has spent over two decades advocating for women’s education and freedom in restrictive societies, called her removal “a dangerous surrender of academic integrity to ideological intimidation.”

“This wasn’t about offense it was about truth,” she told Dobblog in an exclusive interview. “I’ve spent my career researching and speaking up for oppressed women across all cultures and religions. But now, the truth is being labeled hate.”

Critics say the dismissal sets a chilling precedent for free speech and academic independence. Human rights lawyer Imran Dale warned, “We’re entering dangerous territory where universities may be bullied into silencing voices that challenge orthodox views. This is censorship under the cloak of inclusivity.”

Supporters of the Faith and Justice Union, however, insist their actions were justified. “Freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences,” said group spokesperson Zahir Mahmoud. “Dr. Royce consistently portrayed Muslim societies in a degrading manner. Her removal is a step toward mutual respect.”

The controversy has triggered nationwide debate, with politicians and public intellectuals weighing in. British Home Secretary Lydia Marsh condemned the university’s decision, calling it “a cowardly cave-in that undermines the values of a free society.”

Protests and counter-protests have erupted across several campuses, with student groups split over whether Royce’s dismissal was an act of justice or a silencing of critical inquiry.

As the debate intensifies, many fear this could mark a new chapter in the battle over who controls the boundaries of speech in academia and whether universities will continue to serve as arenas for bold thought or fall prey to political pressure.
