Caroline Garcia Announces Retirement Ahead of Final Roland Garros Appearance

In an emotional turn of events just days before the start of the French Open, Caroline Garcia, France’s former world number four in women’s tennis, has officially announced that she will be retiring from professional tennis, making this year’s Roland Garros her farewell appearance.

Garcia, 31, shared the decision with fans and media during a quiet press briefing in Paris on Friday evening. Her voice shook slightly as she described the emotional weight of saying goodbye to the sport she has dedicated her life to since childhood.

“Roland Garros is where my dreams began, and it feels only right that it’s also where they come to an end,” Garcia said. “I’ve given this sport everything, and it has given me unforgettable memories, pain, glory, and purpose.”

Garcia first rose to international prominence in 2011 after a stunning performance against Maria Sharapova in the second round of Roland Garros, where tennis legend Andy Murray famously tweeted that she was a “future number one.” Though she never quite reached that lofty ranking, Garcia went on to capture several WTA titles and represented France at the Olympic Games and in Fed Cup victories.

Her career, marked by aggressive baseline play and powerful serves, inspired a new generation of French female athletes. However, persistent injuries and fluctuating form in recent years have seen her drop in rankings and sparked speculation about her future on the tour.

“I’ve made peace with this decision,” she said, smiling through tears. “My body is tired, but my heart is full.”

French Tennis Federation officials and fans have already begun preparations for a celebratory sendoff at Roland Garros. The stadium is expected to erupt in applause as Garcia walks onto the court for her final matches an end to a passionate chapter in French tennis history.

As tributes from fellow players and former coaches pour in, Caroline Garcia’s name will remain etched in the legacy of tennis not only for her achievements but for the heart and fight she brought to every match.
