Tinubu Frees ₦50 Billion for Varsity Unions, Pledges Education First

Yesterday in Abuja, President Bola Tinubu personally approved the immediate release of ₦50 billion to Nigeria’s three major university staff unions ASUU, NASU and SSANU fulfilling a campaign promise and giving fresh hope to the nation’s higher-education sector. Speaking at the State House, Mr. Tinubu stressed that investing in lecturers, researchers and support staff is key to building a stronger, more competitive Nigeria.

Union leaders welcomed the payment, calling it “a positive start,” and urged the government to sustain regular funding and dialogue. This tranche covers withheld salaries and critical grants, easing months of tension that had sparked warnings of more strikes. Education analysts say the move not only restores trust but also signals that the administration is serious about overhauling campus infrastructure and academic standards.

With this cash injection, universities can clear backlog payments and resume stalled projects from renovated laboratories to digital-learning platforms. For Nigerian students and staff alike, the ₦50 billion release isn’t just figures on paper; it’s the promise of lectures, research breakthroughs and a brighter tomorrow finally coming to life.
