You could feel the tension in the air after Friday’s summit in Alaska. Trump and Putin walked away without a deal to end the fighting in Ukraine, and now all eyes are on Washington as President Volodymyr Zelensky prepares to meet Trump on Monday.
European leaders had been hoping for progress, but Trump struck a different tone. He hinted that the U.S. might be willing to offer direct security guarantees to Ukraine something Europe has been quietly pushing for to strengthen any joint peacekeeping mission. That move, if true, could change the entire dynamic of the war.

At the same time, Trump surprised many by leaning closer to Moscow’s line. He dismissed the idea of a cease-fire, saying Russia and Ukraine should hammer out a full peace deal instead. It’s a position that echoes Putin’s preference, even if it means the fighting continues until both sides can agree.
And on sanctions? Trump told Fox News he won’t be adding new ones against Russia “for now,” signaling a pause in Washington’s economic pressure.
For Zelensky, the stakes couldn’t be higher. He’s heading into the White House looking for guarantees, weapons, and a clear sign the U.S. won’t let Ukraine stand alone. The question is what will he really walk away with?
