Who’s Really in Charge of Policing D.C

Friday morning brought confusion in the nation’s capital. Washington, D.C. officials, federal agencies, and the White House all appeared to be operating on different pages when it came to law enforcement priorities.

Ordinarily, D.C.’s mayor oversees the Metropolitan Police Department, but the city is unique: federal agencies from the Secret Service to the Capitol Police also have broad authority. And when the president decides to deploy federal law enforcement or National Guard troops, local control can quickly get blurred.

That’s exactly what’s happening now. President Trump has hinted at boosting federal law enforcement in D.C., citing crime and security concerns. But the mayor’s office has voiced unease about the plan, saying local communities deserve a say in how their neighborhoods are policed.

The result? Washingtonians woke up Friday morning not entirely sure who is ultimately calling the shots on safety and policing in their city. It’s a question that goes beyond D.C. touching on the delicate balance between federal power, local authority, and the politics that shape both.
