According to Trump, the proposal is the “fastest way to stop the bloodshed” and would guarantee “complete peace” between Moscow and Kyiv. He framed the idea as a necessary compromise, telling aides and allies that Ukraine has already suffered too long and that “sometimes tough deals have to be made for the sake of peace.”
The plan, however, has raised alarm in Europe and among some U.S. lawmakers who fear the move would reward Russian aggression and set a dangerous precedent. Critics argue that conceding the eastern Ukrainian region an area Russia has fought to control since 2014 would effectively hand Vladimir Putin a victory while undermining Ukraine’s sovereignty.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has yet to publicly endorse or reject the proposal, though insiders say Kyiv remains deeply uneasy with any plan that redraws its borders under pressure. European leaders, meanwhile, are walking a tightrope eager to end the war but wary of sacrificing democratic principles to achieve it.
For Trump, the deal could become a defining test of his foreign policy: a bold gamble that might secure peace, or a controversial concession that could haunt U.S. leadership for years.
The world is now left waiting for the next move: will Ukraine accept the trade-off, or will this be another chapter in a war with no easy end?
