Nicola Sturgeon is facing a fierce backlash after publishing her tell-all memoir Frankly, with critics including Alex Salmond’s family accusing her of “cashing in” on the late former SNP leader.
Sturgeon, 55, used the book to make fresh claims about her predecessor, including suggesting it would have been “classic Alex” for Salmond to leak details of a 2018 sexual misconduct investigation against him to the press in order to cast himself as a victim.
But Salmond’s relatives have called the claims “cruel” and “distasteful.” Christina Hendry, Salmond’s niece, branded the memoir “cowardice,” arguing Sturgeon waited until her uncle had passed away to launch such accusations.
“She is using his name for relevance, to promote her book, to earn money,” Hendry said. “She has chosen to wait until he is no longer here to defend himself. It’s left to the family to deal with this and there’s an element of cruelty in that.”
The row comes less than a year after Salmond, who led Scotland through the 2014 independence referendum before resigning, died at 69. He had previously been acquitted of 13 charges of sexual assault in 2020, while also winning a judicial review in 2019 which found the Scottish Government’s handling of complaints against him was “tainted by apparent bias.”
The Salmond family has now reactivated legal action against the Scottish Government, seeking millions in damages for loss of earnings. His widow Moira, supported by a high-powered legal team, is pressing ahead with the case despite his passing.
Sturgeon, meanwhile, insists she is telling her truth, accusing Salmond of attempting to “weaponise trauma” and describing his behavior as “truly disgraceful.” The feud between the two titans of Scottish politics, once allies, remains toxic even after Salmond’s death a political civil war that reshaped the SNP and gave rise to his breakaway Alba Party.
For Salmond’s family, though, the wounds are personal, not political. As Hendry put it:
“She should not have to be going through this and neither should any of the family. In some ways it is quite cruel.”
