Secretary of State Marco Rubio made headlines on Sunday after saying there won’t be a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia “unless both sides make concessions.”
Rubio’s comments came during an appearance on ABC’s This Week, where host Martha Raddatz pressed him about last Friday’s historic summit in Alaska between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin a meeting Rubio himself attended.
When asked whether Putin made any concrete concessions during the closed-door talks, Rubio refused to provide specifics. Instead, he emphasized that no negotiation can succeed if only one side gives ground.
“You can’t have a peace agreement unless both sides make concessions. That’s a fact,” Rubio said. “If not, it’s just called surrender. And neither side is going to surrender.”
He added that while concessions were indeed raised during the discussions, revealing them publicly could derail progress:
“These negotiations only work best when they are conducted privately… in serious negotiations in which people have to go back and respond to constituencies.”
The summit attended by Trump, Putin, Rubio, U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff, and two Russian aides did not produce a formal agreement. Still, Trump framed the meeting as a step forward.
“I believe we had a very productive meeting,” Trump told reporters afterward. “There were many, many points that we agreed on. Most of them. A couple of big ones that we haven’t quite gotten there, but we’ve made some headway. So, there’s no deal until there’s a deal.”
While the world waits to see whether concessions will bring both sides closer to peace, Rubio’s words underline the reality: without compromise, the war will drag on, and a deal will remain out of reach.
