Stephen A. Smith may be known for dominating the sports world with his fiery takes but now, he’s setting his sights on something much bigger: The White House.
Appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert Monday night, the longtime ESPN commentator shocked audiences by openly considering a run for president.
“You want to start as president of the United States?” Colbert asked, half-joking.
“Why not?” Smith fired back, without hesitation.
And just like that, the conversation got real.
Smith, a graduate of Winston-Salem State University and one of the most recognizable voices in sports media, has increasingly leaned into politics on his podcast lashing out at both Democrats and Republicans for what he calls “crippling polarization” and a failure to serve everyday Americans.
“I’m a registered Independent,” Smith said. “I don’t like either party… The American citizens are used as pawns and taken advantage of and I hate it.”
He blasted lawmakers for voting based on party loyalty rather than policy, accusing Washington of turning politics into a team sport where the average American pays the price.
“All you have to do is disagree with the other side. You don’t even have to look at the bill,” Smith said.
But it was his remarks about Donald Trump that really turned heads.
“Trump has them in the palm of his hands,” Smith said of today’s Republicans. “He could snap his fingers and turn his base against them. They know it. They’re scared of it.”
Yet Smith believes he holds a similar power the ability to resonate with the masses.
“I’m not scared. I’m not running,” he added. “If I can have a voice and an impact, I would love to take some of these folks on. Because what they’ve done is against the best interest of this country.”
The comments come just over a year out from the 2026 midterms and with the 2028 presidential race slowly taking shape. Though Smith hasn’t made anything official, this isn’t the first time he’s teased a run. In April, he said he’d “consider” it.
Now, it sounds more like a challenge than a thought.
Could Stephen A. Smith be the next outsider to shake up American politics? One thing’s certain: He’s not staying silent anymore.
