Donald Trump isn’t waiting for 2026 to come to him he’s going after it head-on. With the memory of past Senate losses still stinging, the former president is already laying the groundwork to ensure that, if he returns to the White House, he won’t be handcuffed by a Democratic-controlled Senate again. From backroom meetings to public endorsements, Trump is making it clear: he wants a MAGA-aligned Senate, and he wants it locked in before the midterms arrive.
According to sources close to Trump’s political team, he’s been vetting potential Senate candidates in key battleground states like Arizona, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin often bypassing the traditional GOP leadership and instead elevating hardline loyalists who share his agenda and rhetoric.
“He’s not just playing kingmaker,” said one senior GOP strategist. “He’s trying to build a Senate that won’t defy him no McConnell holdouts, no swing votes.”
Trump has also been quietly funneling resources from his political war chest into PACs that support primary challengers to more moderate Republicans. The message is clear: fall in line or step aside.
Democrats, meanwhile, are taking note. Several DNC insiders say they’re bracing for an aggressive Trump-led offensive in traditionally purple states, particularly where Senate incumbents face tight races.
Trump’s move is as strategic as it is symbolic. After feeling stifled during parts of his first term especially on issues like healthcare repeal and judicial confirmations he’s determined not to repeat the same mistakes.
“He wants a Senate that obeys,” one Republican insider put it bluntly. “And he’s willing to burn bridges to get it.”
With the 2026 map favoring Republicans, Trump’s early push could shape the Senate and the country for years to come.
