What should have been a normal day of shopping turned into a nightmare in Iraq, as a devastating fire swept through a crowded shopping mall, killing more than 60 people and injuring dozens more.
The blaze broke out late Tuesday in a multi-story shopping complex in Baghdad, trapping shoppers and workers inside as thick smoke and flames consumed the building. Chaos unfolded as panicked crowds rushed for exits, many unable to escape in time.
Eyewitnesses described a scene of horror people screaming for help, children separated from their parents, and flames spreading too fast for emergency responders to contain.
“I saw people jumping from windows just to escape the smoke,” said one survivor. “There was no way out. It happened so fast.”
Officials say the fire was likely caused by an electrical fault, though some reports suggest flammable materials stored illegally may have fueled the rapid spread. Emergency services worked through the night to pull bodies from the rubble, and the death toll is expected to rise.

Rescue operations have been hampered by the building’s poor safety conditions an all-too-common issue in commercial buildings across Iraq, where fire safety regulations are often ignored or poorly enforced.
Iraq’s Prime Minister has ordered an investigation and promised accountability, but for many families, that brings little comfort. They are now left mourning loved ones who went to a mall and never came home.
