A Catholic school teacher says she was denied communion at her local parish after her marriage to a same-sex partner became public.
Rebecca Allen, 34, says she was approached by a deacon during mass last weekend and told she was “not in a state of grace.” Allen, who teaches literature at a private religious school, said she had never been warned or disciplined by her employer.
“I’ve never felt more humiliated,” Allen said. “This is not what Jesus would do.”
The Diocese has confirmed the denial of communion, saying it was “in accordance with Church doctrine.” But national Catholic advocacy groups say the incident reflects growing tensions between LGBTQ+ members and the institutional church.
