The wife of David Stephens has spoken out with heartbreak and hope as search crews believe they’ve found the wreckage of the plane her husband was flying when he vanished earlier this week.
David Stephens, 74, was piloting a small aircraft on Tuesday afternoon when he failed to arrive at Moruya Airport on the New South Wales South Coast. The flight originated from Wangaratta, Victoria, and was expected to be a routine journey. But just after 4:30pm, the plane simply disappeared.
For two agonizing days, rescue teams combed rugged terrain by ground and air in the Snowy Mountains. Then, around 4pm Thursday, a rescue helicopter located what authorities believe is the crashed aircraft near the plane’s last known GPS coordinates.
“A rescue helicopter located what is believed to be the crashed plane near the plane’s last known GPS location,” a NSW Police spokesperson confirmed.
The aircraft’s pilot, David Stephens, is understood to have been the sole occupant on board. A longtime resident of Brogo a small, close-knit town north of Bega Stephens was known as a dedicated tax accountant and a kind neighbor who planned to retire within months.
“He loved flying. It was his joy and his freedom,” said one local resident who knew Stephens for over a decade. “He always had a calmness about him.”
The search, which was initially led by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), is now under the direction of NSW Police, with investigations set to continue Friday.
As the community holds its breath for final confirmation, Stephens’ wife has shared a quiet but emotional message, thanking those who have worked tirelessly in the search efforts.
No official word has yet been released regarding Mr. Stephens’ condition.
