Florida Councilwoman Suspended Over Posts Targeting Obama and LGBTQ Community

A city councilwoman in Groveland, Florida, has been suspended after allegedly sharing hateful social media posts that included racist remarks about former President Barack Obama and disturbing content targeting the LGBTQ community.

Judith Fike, a Republican and District 4 councilwoman since October 2024, is now at the center of a political firestorm after screenshots of her past online activity were sent anonymously to Groveland’s vice mayor. The screenshots reportedly contained racially charged language aimed at Obama and posts referencing violent methods against gay individuals.

“On June 30, I received a package in the mail that contained some of the most vile and disgusting social media comments,” said Vice Mayor Barbara Gaines during a heated council meeting. “Councilwoman Fike has admitted to making racial and LGBTQ comments, and so, I want to address those tonight.”

The Groveland City Council voted Monday night to suspend Fike while an investigation moves forward. The alleged posts, some dating back as far as 2015, were described by city officials as “anti-gay,” “racist,” and “deeply offensive.”

Fike has not denied that some of the posts came from her accounts, but insists they were “manipulated,” claiming others were taken out of context or not authored by her at all. She has since filed a lawsuit against the city, claiming her suspension is illegal and part of a political smear campaign to stop her re-election bid.

“This is about silencing my voice,” Fike argued. “I’m being targeted because I’m a conservative.”

Her lawyer, Lake County Commissioner Anthony Sabatini, also slammed the suspension, calling it “unlawful and unconstitutional,” and argued that the city council had no authority to remove her.

The city has hired an outside law firm to conduct an independent investigation, and Fike says she still plans to attend future city meetings, despite the suspension.

A Florida councilwoman is off the job for now after offensive posts about Barack Obama and the LGBTQ community surfaced. Whether it’s a smear campaign or a case of accountability, the investigation may decide her political future.
