A routine welfare check turned violent in Sydney’s west on Friday evening, leaving one young female police officer unconscious and another assaulted, in what police are calling a “sickening and unprovoked attack.”
NSW Police were called to Bunya Road in Bidwill just before 6:30 p.m. after concerned residents reported seeing a young man lying in the middle of the road. When two female officers aged 23 and 22 approached to check on the individual, the situation quickly spiraled out of control.
According to authorities, the man suddenly lashed out, kicking and punching the 23-year-old constable, who then fell to the ground and lost consciousness. In a desperate attempt to intervene, the 22-year-old officer was also allegedly punched in the face before she managed to deploy capsicum spray to defend herself.
“This was an allegedly unprovoked and sickening attack on three young police officers who were simply doing their job,” Acting NSW Police Commissioner Thurtell said in a statement on Saturday. “I commend the bravery and courage of the officers involved. They deserve respect, not violence.”
Paramedics and first responders rushed to the scene and provided treatment to the unconscious officer, who was later transported to Westmead Hospital in stable condition.
The incident has sparked widespread concern and outrage, highlighting the growing dangers faced by frontline officers even during calls meant to protect public welfare.
