Deputy FBI Director Dan Bongino is reportedly weighing resignation following a major internal rift between the FBI and the Department of Justice, multiple sources familiar with the situation told CNN.
At the center of the conflict: the recently released Jeffrey Epstein memo, which has ignited a political and legal firestorm across Washington. The memo, containing newly unsealed names, communications, and case handling details, has cast fresh scrutiny on elite figures and exposed what some insiders are calling “glaring failures” in past investigations.
Bongino, a former Secret Service agent and longtime conservative commentator turned law enforcement official, is said to be “deeply frustrated” with how the DOJ is handling the fallout, particularly around transparency and political interference. Sources say he believes the FBI is being “set up to take the fall” for decisions made at higher levels and that he’s “not willing to be the scapegoat.”
The possible resignation of such a high-profile figure would mark a seismic shake-up at the top of the FBI, especially amid a deeply polarized political climate and growing public distrust over how the Epstein case has been handled and who’s been protected.
While the DOJ has yet to comment, insiders suggest a full-blown crisis is unfolding behind the scenes.
If Bongino steps down, it could signal a fracture between federal law enforcement and its political overseers and raise urgent new questions about who really wanted the Epstein files buried.
