Eight people have been hospitalized after a BMW crashed into a care home in Sunderland, tearing through a wall and prompting a major emergency response late Wednesday night.
The dramatic crash occurred around 9:40pm at Highcliffe Care Home in Witherwack, leaving a gaping hole in one of the building’s exterior walls. Photos from the scene show the BMW saloon resting on a grassy bank beside the home, its front end visibly damaged.
Emergency services rushed to the scene in large numbers. According to a spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service, the 999 call came in at 9:41pm reporting a vehicle had collided with a premises in the Whitechurch Road area.

In total, three emergency ambulance crews, a specialist paramedic, a duty officer, a clinical team leader, three Hazardous Area Response Team crews, a tactical advisor, a tactical commander, and two patient transport service teams were dispatched.
“We assisted with the evacuation of residents at the property,” the spokesperson confirmed. “Eight patients were conveyed to hospital.”
Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service and Northumbria Police also attended the scene, though the cause of the crash has not yet been officially confirmed.
Residents and families are shaken but grateful that no lives were lost. An investigation into how the crash occurred is now underway.
