Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has appointed Hennadiy Shapovalov as the new commander of Ukraine’s Land Forces. The decision comes just days after a devastating attack on a military training area in the Dnipropetrovsk region that killed 12 soldiers and wounded over 60 a tragic blow that exposed gaps in Ukraine’s battlefield readiness.
Shapovalov, a seasoned military leader with deep NATO ties, previously led Operational Command South and served as a liaison officer at NATO’s coordination center in Germany. His appointment signals a shift toward tighter cooperation with Western allies and a major shakeup in Ukraine’s military structure.
President Zelensky stated that the country needs “strong, effective leadership on the ground,” especially now as the war with Russia enters a critical phase. Shapovalov replaces Mykhailo Drapatyi, who has now been reassigned to lead Ukraine’s joint forces, a role still critical in the ongoing fight.
This change marks not just a response to a tragedy but a clear message: Ukraine is adapting, learning, and moving fast to tighten its defenses as the war deepens. All eyes are now on Shapovalov to see how he reshapes the forces under his command in one of the most pivotal moments of Ukraine’s fight for survival.
