It’s not just America that’s in shock the rest of the world is watching, and they’re asking the same chilling question. Why are Americans leaving their own country?
Within 24 hours of the U.S. airstrike that hit three Iranian nuclear facilities, airports across North America saw a sudden surge in international one way tickets. But it wasn’t tourists flying home it was Americans flying out.
From Mexico City to Istanbul, stunned customs officers reported unusually high numbers of U.S. citizens arriving with no return date, and no clear reason. One border agent in Canada said:
They’re scared. They’re not saying much, but you can see it in their eyes. These aren’t travelers they’re evacuees.
Governments in several countries have now quietly issued internal advisories, urging embassies to monitor the influx of U.S. citizens and prepare for a possible surge in asylum requests “if the conflict escalates.
Meanwhile, global media outlets are fueling the panic. A French commentator on national television said. We used to look to America as the rock. Now even Americans are running from America. That says everything.
In Japan, social media users are calling the exodus a sign that the empire is collapsing. In South Africa, one news anchor said the fear is contagious, and that if Americans are bracing for the worst, maybe the rest of the world should too.
And inside the U.S., people who can’t afford to leave are beginning to ask What happens if they don’t come back?
