Several former employees have accused Walmart of secretly testing facial emotion recognition systems in select stores to track the mood and engagement levels of shoppers without their consent.
According to reports, hidden cameras embedded in ceiling sensors and self-checkout kiosks monitored expressions like frustration, confusion, and excitement.
The data, insiders claim, was being used to adjust product placements, ad displays, and staffing levels in real time.

A Walmart spokesperson denied any unlawful activity, stating that “the company tests emerging technology to improve customer service in compliance with applicable laws.”
Privacy groups, however, are demanding answers. “This is surveillance capitalism at its worst,” said Evan Brooks from the American Privacy Forum.
